As the Toronto Chapter of the Glenmuir High School Past Students’ Association gears up for its highly anticipated upcoming dinner & dance, I had the pleasure of speaking with Chapter President Sherine Sutherland. For the last four years, she has worked alongside a passionate local alumni network dedicated to supporting their alma mater back home in May Pen, Jamaica. In this exclusive conversation, we discuss the chapter’s growing legacy, its profound impact on current Glenmuir High students, and why this year’s celebration is an absolute “must attend” event for the entire Caribbean community.
Part 1: History & Legacy
Q: How long has the Toronto chapter of Glenmuir PSA been around, and how does it collaborate with the home chapter in Jamaica and other, if any, Glenmuir PSA groups in North America?
A: The newly energized Toronto Chapter of the Glenmuir Past Students’ Association has been active for over five years. We’ve built a strong and supportive network of alumni committed to giving back to our alma mater.
We work closely with the home chapter in Jamaica, as well as our sister chapters in Florida and New York. Together, we support each other’s events, collaborate on fundraising initiatives, and partner on projects that directly benefit Glenmuir High School and its students. Our shared commitment ensures that, no matter where in the world a Glenmurite is, we remain united in supporting our school and preserving the Glenmuir spirit.
Q: How long have you served as president, and what keeps you energized to lead?
A: I have been in the role of Chapter President for 4 years now. I am very passionate about giving back. I always wanted to do my part to help the next generation of leaders. In the words of Churchill, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” So once the opportunity arose to lead the association, it was a no-brainer. I am who I am because of the solid foundation provided to me at Glenmuir High School.

What continues to energize me is knowing that our work creates real opportunities for current Glenmuir students. Whether it’s funding scholarships, supporting the breakfast program, improving school resources, or bringing alumni together to give back, every initiative reminds me of the impact we can make collectively.
Part 2: Impact on Glenmuir High
Q: How exactly does the Toronto PSA support the current students and infrastructure back home at Glenmuir High today?
A: I believe we all have a responsibility to help the next generation succeed. Seeing alumni reconnect, businesses and community members rally behind our cause, and students benefit from our efforts is incredibly rewarding. That shared commitment to our school and its future is what motivates me to continue leading and serving.
Through our annual fundraising efforts, we’ve provided:
- Scholarships to Glenmuir students
- Assistance with campus improvements
- Classroom resources
- Assistance with the breakfast program at the school
Part 3: The Dinner & Dance Celebration
Q: What is the primary purpose of this upcoming dinner & dance?
A: The primary purpose of our upcoming dinner & dance is to bring the Glenmuir family and the wider community together to raise funds for initiatives that directly benefit our students and the school.
While the evening is a celebration of our heritage, friendships, and Glenmuir pride, it is first and foremost a fundraiser. Proceeds will primarily support student scholarships and the school’s breakfast program.
More than just a great night out, every ticket purchased, sponsorship secured, and donation made is an investment in the future of Glenmuir High School.
Q: For fellow alumni and the broader Jamaican community reading this, what makes this specific event a “must attend” celebration?
A: This year’s dinner & dance is more than just a gala—it’s a celebration of our Glenmuir legacy and the impact we can make when we come together as a community.
For fellow alumni, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with classmates, reminisce about our school days, and strengthen the bonds that make the Glenmuir family so special.
For the broader Jamaican community, it’s an evening that celebrates our culture, our achievements, and our commitment to giving back. Guests can look forward to great entertainment, delicious food, exciting fundraising activities, and the chance to network with professionals, community leaders, and friends who all share a passion for making a difference.
Part 4: Community & Culture
Q: How would you describe the energy of the past students in this chapter, and what do they get out of staying connected?
A: The energy within the Toronto chapter is one of our greatest strengths. It’s a wonderful blend of passion, pride, and purpose. Our members genuinely care about Glenmuir High School and about one another, and that shared commitment creates a strong sense of community.
We have alumni from different graduating classes, professions, and backgrounds, yet when we come together, we’re united by our Glenmuir experience and a common goal of giving back. Whether we’re organizing fundraising events, mentoring, volunteering, or simply reconnecting at social gatherings, there’s a real spirit of camaraderie and service.
